Oil is oil to a 4.0 I6. I work at a Dealership and I keep all the oil quarts after they have been dumped into the cars that come in and drain them into a big 10 quart container and just use that, all different viscosity and synthetic/non synthetic. Jeep runs great. then pay like $5 for a filter and free oil change every 3 weeks(I drive ~200 miles a day to school in my XJ)

I spent a lot of time reading through this thread and switched to the Rotella T6 with my last oil change. The decisions for me was about the detergents in the oil, the XJ sat for about three years prior to me bringing it home. This is an occasional driver for me but I have been really busy lately so I have only put about 500 miles on it since June. I agree with the thought of changing the oil too often but this is my first use of a synthetic so since I won't get to the mileage anytime soon to justify a change how long would you leave it in your engine ?

Did you happen to look under the valve cover with a flashlight to see how dirty things were?

Yes, sometime prior to the oil change I replaced the valve cover gasket with a felpro. It didn't look that bad to me but that is also the first time I have ever done that. I added a couple of pictures I took in the process.

Looks exceptionally good,Cliffy. Just my opinion but I changed three vehicles over to T6 w/NAPA Gold filters the yr before last and do 8K miles on each before an oil and filter change.

The way I see it, oil is by far cheaper than having to replace an engine. Quality oil and filter can stay in engine for a while pending oil analysis, vehicle specific of course. iMHO, it isn't worth cheaping out trying to use mixed oil to save money.
This a GOOD thread that needs to be kept up. I see where some are sending out oil for analysis. I know there are many variables that can make the results different in each engine but I'm looking forward to seeing the test results.

Cant wait to see what they say of my jeep T6 lol
