I've got mine in a basket. with a tie down strap. When I'm home Or around town i keep a cable bike lock on the Tire, Basket, and rack. Plus you can throw a spare gas can up there.

This weekend we're going to pick up the stuff to make a rack like a few have done. It looks like a great project and they turn out looking almost as good as the store bought ones for a lot less money.

Something I have seen done before with factory bars is take some angle iron and cut notches in them and then run them between the factory runner so the overall shape is an "I" attach with bolts drilled through the cross runners and then attach tire to angle iron. I have also seen the angle iron used with holes in it (similar to the garage door stuff)

another idea thats common over here is ladder roof bar fittings, and most of them come with a pree drilled hole for a pad lock.
most diy stores shout have them

I just put a large bolt through one of the struts on my roof rack and put the tire on it so that I could put a nut down and screw it all down really nice. I just have a bike lock that goes around the rack and through the ceter of the tire. Its a really nice custom way of doing it if you already have a rack.
Am I the only one that got a huge crunching sound when hitting bumps with the spare mounted to the stock luggage rack bars?
I thought the truck was coming apart the first time I crossed a set of railroad tracks.
We followed the instructions listed in the above link and my stepson and I built this one yesterday. It's real sturdy (surprisingly so) and all we have left to do is paint it. Also like the fact that all the materials used to build it were galvanized which should really help out with corrosion.
Anyway. The instructions were great. The list complete and even the pricing was right on. It cost me $60 including the rental of the conduit bender. That also included the 3 pieces of 1/2" conduit for the crossing bars to make the bottom. I only bought four pieces of 1" conduit rather than the six on the list. I felt confident enough that I would be able to get the bends right without practicing on the extra two pieces.
The only difference/problem was that Home Depot does not rent the bender (at least not anywhere in Phoenix area). I had to rent it elsewhere.
Many thanks to gornikebounder and warthog for putting up their information regarding how to build this rack.
Since we're using it to hold the spare, we went with the crossing bars like warthog did for extra support and to keep the tire off the actual roof.
