I have been painstakingly working on my RMS all damn week. Issues with getting the pan out, etc but now I'm having issues getting the upper part of the seal out. Any recommendations?
Also, I believe I have the wrong bearing cap in my jeep or the wrong bottom section of the seal.... the wings on the bottom of the seal have no seat in my bearing cap. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Can't remember on the "wings" but on getting the top out I used a punch and very very carefully tapped on it until came out. Be careful.

While pushing seal out rotate motor with crank bolt . Do same to install coat with oil when installing.

 

from some quick research it looks like the cap you have seems is of a grand cherokee. the seal you have is correct for a 99 xj..
maybe the engine was swapped at some point? can you take your cap to the dealer?

 

Yea something doesn't add up with the cap and the seal? I could tell work had been done in there since it was clear the pan had been dropped before I did this removal.

 

i just checked Rock auto.com. the seal that would fit the cap you have is for a 2001 xj. looks like the seal changed in 2001.

 

Is it different from old one I gather.

no problem. You may have a newer engine than you thought. Maybe the dealer can help with the casting number?
for the upper part of the seal like said use a punch (brass if you can) and push it out. there is a wire inside the seal, that's what you want to hit on. be careful not to hit the crankshaft. use a good size hammer (whatever that means). but too small of a hammer will make it more difficult. at least that was my experience.

 

yes, it is two parts but both look like the upper half (no wings).

 

Ha. It was the best way I could describe it. I didn't know what the "wings" were called. But I knew there wasn't room for them on my stinkin *** cap.

 

It happens that I waz just researching that myself. Besides Freedgrs excelent tip, IIRC he mentioned driving the seal from the passenger side. I guess this guy loosened his other mains...IDK about that>. OK I deleted the Utube link due to really foul language. Looks like I'll be here soon myself.

 

lol I've sounded like this guy for 3 days.
I only tried one side of the top seal as to not mash both sides and have the seal FUBAR and not be able to get it out. I'll keep picking at it tomorrow - no brass punch available. May need to invest in one, however, as this job has turned into a nightmare.
How do I turn the motor crank to loosen it?
