i just bought a 1992 jeep cheerokee has v6 (h.o) auto ...when i take off from a corner or any where...i count ever time my tranny makes a change an it changes 4 time by the time im at 45mph an when im at 55mph im at 2,200 rpm an i dont know if that right i thought it should shift to over drive so i speed up an hold it steady at 65mph an doesnt shift but its at 3,000rpm so any idea all comments are welcome ......thanks in advance

well the cherokee either had a 4 speed with overdrive or a 3 speed and if it shifts 4 times from a dead stop that means it would go from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to 4, now if you feel a 4th shift its probally your overdrive unit so yes i would say its normal but next time i go out i will pay attention to at what points mine shifts
also the cherokee does not have a V style engine it is an in line 6

Best way to tell if it is in overdrive is to get to a steady speed and check the RPM. Now put the shifter down into the 3 position and see if the rpms go up.

Do you hear banjos?
That does not sound right. I've got 4.88s and at 65 I sit a little over 2400 rpms. I don't know what you've got goning on, but it sounds like something is not right there. I could be wrong, it just doesn't sound right to me. HTH!!

the 4th "shift" you feel is most likely the torque converter locking up.
if you give it a little extra throttle or go uphill the torque converter will unlock to give you a little extra power, sounds like yours is unlocking prematurely 3000 rpm is very high for 65 mph in a stock xj. i don't know how to fix the issue, but thats my diagnosis.

If all of the other shifting feels normal, can't he just replace the converter to fix the problem?? Isn't there a clutch pack in the converter that could be out??

Per this nifty website (http://www.onlineconversion.com/bigger_tires.htm) it says your RPM @ 65mph in 3th gear (1:1) is 2394.599 In 4th (.75:1) @ 65mph it says 1795.95 rpm. This is with a 3.07 rear end ratio.. If you have 3.55 for example your RPMs should be 3rd gear=2769, 4th gear=2076.75 This is also with stockish 28" tires. Try it for yourself with the correct info and see what you get.

Could be a band broke. my old limited was pulling small empty u-haul trailer up 495 Wash. DC and hit the gas and it sounded like a bottle breaking in the transmission. then it wouldnt go past 3rd . not to good for driveing down 5 lane 55- 70 mph highway. just a thought.
