They make a plastic tool to pop those things. I got a set for like $5 when I replaced my radiator 2 days ago... Since the tabs are broken I do not know what to tell you... You may have to replace the line.

Got new radiator in and hooked up. Got brand new trans cooling lines upper and lower, even the ports brand new cuz the no one sells the flippin plastic retainer clips that go into the tranmy, so, went to the dealer to get em and the whole port assembly that imcluded the clips were cheaper but expemsive try bout $55 lol. The new lines one ends thT go into the radiator, dnt use retainer clips, just plug em in, fired my xj up and the upper line where it connects spewed oil everywhere I thougbt my fan cut it . But was the new ends I pushed the ends in together more, fired it up and let it run , seemed to fix it :/ I have gallon/half of coolant in the system and resevoir still not full.... Anyone got any ideas howuch coolant these things take??

You gonna install a radiator with a cap and ditch the closed system/bottle? Hey, "kick the bottle". I like that.
