I was praying it wasn't a cam bearing, it sounded like it was coming dead center passenger side of the engine! Mine was relatively quiet, but definitely noticeable and definitely not there before the trip. I can see if it were really loud it would be hard to locate. I had belt squeal for the better part of last year. We replaced the idler pully, the water pump (and thermostat), several belts of various tensions, a used a whole can of belt dressing, the *** end of a candle and finally, the culprit: the vibration damper pulley that appeared to have shat out half its rubber. Starting it up and hearing nothing chirp or squeak or whine like a pig it was a wonderful thing
