Default Replacing Head & Head gasket- questions

Hey guys,

So I am going to have to replace the head gasket on my 2000 XJ and I figured since I'm going in there I might as well replace the head. I'm thinking of going with the Clearwater head as most people recommend that.

My question is, what other items should be replaced when doing this? ie other gaskets, other components that are suggested) the jeep has 164,000 miles on it and it looks babied and kept in really great shape.

I am getting a little bit of what I would describe as a tapping or rattling when idling but it goes away when I rev it.

any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also, any links to videos or info on the process of replacing these things as this is my first time doing any major engine work.

thanks

I don’t think anything else really NEEDS to be replaced unless necessary. Outside of the obvious cracked header or thermostat I’d take a look at the freeze plugs since youll have easy access.

Yeah, I'd go for a set of new headbolts. Some people say you don't need them, but myself, I would feel more confident using new bolts. Make sure you use thread sealer on that right front bolt by the thermostat. It's the only one threaded into the water jacket.

For gaskets, you'll need the intake/exhaust manifold gasket, and the water pump gasket. Off the top of my head, that's it.

But that all I needed came with the FelPro gasket kit I bought at NAPA.

The only other one you'll need is the valve cover gasket. That did NOT come with the kit, and you might as well put a good one in there while you have it opened up.

The valve cover gasket looks brand new, could I just keep that? Or do you have to replace it anytime you open it up?

If it's a steel and neoprene sandwich and isn't damaged taking it off, you can reuse it.
