replacing cylinder head. got a question?
I ordered a cyl head from J&C cylinder heads. my question is, is it advisable to replace the studs and dowels? I tried looking at Advance Auto Parts, but I can't seem to find them. Anyone got a part number ? any help would be appreciated

Maybe check with J&C? Or the dealer. I'd use the old dowels myself if they are fine. Maybe they will provide them? Your local parts store should have the studs I would guess. Brass or bronze might be sweet....

The dowels and the exact fit studs are available from the dealer as well......and believe it or not are very competitively priced. If I didn't rip the parts bag to shreds getting mine out of it, I would give you the part number.
Just my luck..No Dowels at any of the Local Dealers. grr
I never taken a dowel out of cylinder head..How can you get those suckers out? I can't imagine using some channel locks as it might tear up the finish on them..Any advise ?

two nuts on the top threads - lock them together then undo on the bottom one.

Wow! "Dealers?" I have to go out of state to get to one! I'd use a vice grip on the dowels. Twist & pry. I've never seen a new head. Guess I'd turn them around, put the boogered end in the head. They mainly align the gaskets till it's torqued I think. Yea, double nutting is suppose to work to remove studs. I think it takes allot of words not allowed here also.
2;25 Whoops! you don't need to remove any studs.

Thanks for the advise.
I found a local engine exchange business that has two dowels for the 4.0 in stock. 2 bucks each. And the dealer has the studs for 5USD each.
Might as well just get new hardware.
But now I am the fence on getting a Banks exhaust Header. some local jeeper has one for sale. new 350..Not sure if it make tons of difference for whp or MPGs on these engines. Recently got a Dynomax catback.
decision decisions.

I ordered a head from J&C and it came with the dowels, but no studs. My head was for my 90 XJ not certain how different it is for newer stuff. I laid the heads side by side and swapped everything off the old head onto the new head before I shipped the old head back. The actual r and r of the head from the motor was pretty straight forward. Easy in my eyes
This head came with a plug missing as well. It sits on this particular spot marked in red. Would this be typical of a later revised cyl head? anyone know the size of the plug or bolt that goes there?
thanks in advance.

The coolant temp sensor for the gauge goes there on the earlier 4.0l. I do not think the newer jeeps have them. check the casting number and make sure they sent you the correct cylinder head
Called the vendor, they say it is a 0331 that has been modified. The hole was plugged with a 1/8 pipe brass plug.
The jeep is running fine so far. No leaks anywhere. knock on wood.
