Do you hear banjos?
Cat back exhaust system, such as Magnaflow, or Gibson. At that point it's a bolt on process. To just replace the cat is a weld on procedure, and unless you know how to weld, would have to be done at a shop. There are no "clamp on" type cats to my knowledge. HTH!!

I replaced my whole X system. Went to my local NAPA and picked up new down pipe with new foil cone gasket, 02 sensor, tail pipe and 5 new 2 1/4 clamps(two for the cat, two for the muffler and one on the hanger out back) The link above is the cat i went with. You could see right throw it. As for the muffler I bought a Hooker from my friend (later that night I picked up a real one too HAHA just kidding) Whole operation went pretty smooth. Except my x manifold is now cracked. The PO tack welded the the two nuts on to the damn studs for the manifold. We had to cut the nut off and then use a air hammer to knock them out. Which cracked the manifold. But I think it was going on its own any way. Just one more thing to keep fixing and loving every second of it.

i just took a peek underneath the jeep and i'm not sure what the flange bolts are you're talking about and it looks as though the hangers for the cat and the muffler have been welded into place. is that right?

On the replacement cat there are no "flange bolts" the 2 bolt flange you are talking about ( i think ) is the pipe coming off the exhaust manifold. so if you are replacing that then there are 3 things you need to buy. the head pipe, the catalytic, and the exhaust system. all which are vehicle specific to your xJ. the cat is magmaflow, and the other pieces are made by walker dynomax. I did it the easy way and went here: http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/
After putting my VIN in, I found there was a recall on my CAT and the Stealorship did it for free. Course I didn't get a high flow cat or anything, but the price was right.

the hanger your talking about is welded on to the down pipe. And it slides into the tranny mount. A little PB lets it slip in and out like warm apple pie.
