They don't. They're supposed to, but they don't. I always said the same thing until my HO Wrangler overheated after a new radiator install. I burped the system, and I haven't had problems since.

Burp the cooling system.

When filled correctly/slowly, they all "self burp" with a few heat/cool cycles. No amount of "burping" will compensate for a improperly filled/half empty cooling system. Jacking the front up "to burp" is a myth perpetuared in forums/on the Internet. Look at the motor.......the front is higher than the back so the small amount of air that is in the cooling system when properly filled will naturally migrate to the front of the motor and exit.

A few heat/cool cycles in either open or closed systems will remove air from a properly filled cooling system.

Let me repeat myself:

I always said the same thing until I had the exact opposite experience.

And what's the worst it could do for the guy? It COULD fix the problem. It definitely will NOT cause damage.

Same here. I've watched burping a properly filled '94 and '97 take a lot of air out of the system.

And as for not raising the front end, please get familiar with basic plumbing. Just because the front of the engine is higher than the rear doesn't mean that there is no benefit to raising the front. More incline means any air will move faster to the higher locations, and the inside of that cooling system is NOT one straight, smooth pipe.

This is a no-brainer. It's FREE, it's EASY, and it takes all of maybe 10 minutes.

I don't understand why some of you preach so hard against burping. It's like it's Holy Dogma that burping shall NOT be performed!

It makes NO sense.

Do it however u want to but, draining/refilling the cooling system and slamming the hood closed for a year or so without checking coolant level in the bottle/rad is a overheat waiting to happen.

The open system rad and bottle must be checked for coolant level daily for several days/several heat/cool cycles after a drain/refill. Only the bottle needs to be checked on a closed system.

I have to check my fluids more than once a year? News to me!

I installed a new rad, filled it, and it was overheating within minutes of startup. Thought something else went when the old rad exploded. Decided to try burping the system so I could prove to Cruiser that it isn't an issue on an open system. Go figure, it fixed my problem.

Sure is.

But.... who's suggesting that?

U've never read between the lines of some of the newbie posts?.......really? (Hint..........a post that says brown lumpy coolant.) I didn't recall Cruiser saying the system must be burped. Guess I missed that.

I am putting a new t-stat in mine, and drilled a small hole in it, and placed the hole at the top to help burp the air out. Don't know if it was worth doing, but I have always liked the t-stats with the little jiggler ball in them to help get the air out and couldn't find one for my Xj......RR

There's a dime sized hole beside the t-stat that should bleed air. The jiggle valve only bleeds air when the motor is off (no coolant circulating)......the jiggle valve is sealed/closed when coolant is flowing (motor running).

Well it seems to have worked itself out after a couple cycles it had settled down to running around 195.

Thanks for all the replies guys

Don't forget to stay on top of this. Check coolant level in rad/bottle motor cold.
