Replace the AC Compressor or Clutch?
1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L
About 2 months ago when the AC was turned on, I noticed the power steering and alternator cut out and the engine would warm up. Each time I would shut the AC off, use it the next day without issue. It happened about once or twice a month and I was concerned but when I had time to work with it, I couldn't recreate the issue. Two days ago the problem returned and on top of that, a squealing sound only when the clutch on the AC compressor was engaged. This time I found the serpentine belt not turning and burning up on the crank pulley. I tinkered with it for about an hour and it happened at random and I could shut the AC off, engine would resume as normal and turn the AC back on and have cold air for about 2-3 minutes and the belt would seize up again.
I narrowed it down to the clutch or compressor. The belt probably needs to replaced (glazing) but it only seizes up when the AC is on so I am guessing it isn't the cause of the issue here.
Anyone have any problems similar to this? How hard is replacing the AC Compressor or clutch (I have a lot of engine/carb experience, just not AC systems)
