89 Renix CAD XJ. I'm looking to upgrade my front brakes to stop the 33's and my trailer a little better.
I'm planning on installing a WJ booster at the same time as replacing the calipers. I need to replace the calipers because one of my originals seized.
I am wondering if anyone knows if there is any difference in braking power between a Renix-style caliper and an 91-up style caliper. They mount completely differently, and I have the knuckles from a newer XJ if necessary. Rockauto says the bore is 2.6 for both styles of calipers.
Is there any known benefit to buying the newer style calipers and swapping knuckles? I know there is better brake pad availability with the newer style calipers.
They are pretty similar in price to replace, so cost is not an issue.

I haven't done this yet, but I think the WJ rotors and calipers can be made to work on XJs. There is a bit of work to it, but the WJ brakes are a lot bigger and would be a healthy upgrade for reasonable cash if you get JY parts.
Maybe there is some sort of kit available prefabbed?

I've already got the WJ booster ready to be installed, and the WJ knuckle/brake/steering swap would certainly be ideal, as I need some new steering desperately also, but I think it's a bit big of a project both in time and finance for the time being, as the Jeep is a DD.

I would just replace the caliper or calipers as needed, with original, and get that booster on there.
No real difference wit the later front brakes except a propensity to warp rotors.

Alright, that's kind of what I figured. I guess the newer ones are more universal, as every LPS I called has them in stock, but has to order in the order style. Thanks for the input. My only other thought was that you can buy cool EBC or other fancy style pads for the newer calipers
