8.25 29 spline vs 27 spline
I'm pretty sure my 8.25 in my 98 is a 29 spline. I'm gonna run 35s but I'm still on stock gears so I was thinking of regearing to 4.10s.
I was searching craigslist the other day and a guy is selling a 27 spline 8.25 axle with 4.10 gears and trac loc limited slip for $200 he said the gears look to be in pretty good shape. So I figured it would save me some money to buy an axle that's already regeared instead of paying to regear my current one.
What I'm wondering is, is it worth it to go from a 29 spline 8.25 down to a 27 spline 8.25? Will both if either support 35s?

I forgot to add that I normally drive my jeep on street and the wheeling I've done so far was light stuff nothing crazy although now that i have a second car I'll probably take it wheeling more

There's not much benefit honestly going to 4.10 gearing with 35s anyway. 27 spline 8.25s only have bigger tubes, the shafts are actually a hair smaller than D35 shafts so you will be pushing it with 35s for sure. You should save up and either go 4.56 or 4.88, 4.10s top out at 33s.

So your saying I should stick with my 29 spline then and regear it to 4.56s? I know it's off topic but will my front D30 be fine on 35s?

Yes stick with 29 spline and go for 4.56 or 4.88. More people will recommend the 4.88s. If you're staying open diffs then yes both axles will be fine. If locked then you'd kinda be pushing it but that's the setup I'm trying to run.

I have a 99 with the 29 spline Chy 8.25/D30, I run 2 different sets of mounted tires both sets on 15x8" rims with 3.75" of BS on one set are a set of 33x12:50x15's Soft Eights and the other a set Beadlocks 35x12:50x15's.
When I re-geared and installed lockers I was running the 33" tires and bought the 4.56 gears making it stock again with the 33's. After running them a short time wished I had 4.88's even more so with the 35's .............. But one small problem with using the 4.88's in a D30 are that they make for a weaker gear setup due to the size, so I stayed with 4.56 as in my opinion you should consider as well. DO NOT consider 4.10 with 35" tires if you have an AW4 trans it would be gut-less. Do consider installing lockers the same time as gears, cost will be the same if done so and a really good upgrade.
In fact IMHO gears/lockers were the single best upgrade that I made on my XJ (3.55-4.56's & Detroit Lockers).
