Call it 87-90. Last years before OBDI (which DOES store codes and more in it's PCM) Renix (with an ECU),has no check engine light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renix
You pretty much need a DVM to do much on one, more so than the newer, anyway.

Ha! Well, glad to hear that. An ECU starts fresh each time you fire her up. I gather a PCM adjusts things AND stores trouble codes that can be read with a code reader.
It could be Renix causes less trouble, but it might be harder to find it when it does. (just made that up, sounds good though!)

Yes it is a Renix. And no, it is not a bad thing. You have a ton of support on here if you do have a issue you cannot resolve. Cruiser54 is a genius with Renix. And his write ups have helped me out tremendously with my beloved '89. Read up on them, and I hope they help you out too.

Yes. All RENIX references is the engine management system (it's a mish mash of Renault and Bendix). Basically, all of the sensors and decision making parts of the electrical system are different from the '91 and on OBDI and OBDII stuff. The engine had some differences, the newer one being a High Output (HO) version. All the suspension, tranny, etc are nearly the same, with the usual year to year differences.

No. You need to replace almost everything under the hood. Sensors, ECU, wiring, and some hard parts that are made to fit the sensors like throttle body, manifolds, etc. The only gain would be getting a CEL. The 91+ motors that are termed "High Output" are only slightly tweaked, but going to an HO setup would mean OBD-1 land and swapping the head too

RENIX was 1984-1990 XJ & MJ w/AMC engine - the 1984-1986 with the Chevvy V6 was OBD-I, and I'm not sure what control setup was used for the Renault 4-126TD 1985-1987.
RENIX was the control system used by AMC, designed and spec'd by RENault and built by bendIX/king (thus, RENIX.)
Nothing wrong with RENIX - I've had five rigs. Most troubleshooting can be done with a DMM, an analogue meter is only needed for a couple of tests.
I've heard of only five RENIX ECU failures worldwide, I've managed to lay hands on four of them (I was part of the head-shed that repaired the fifth - it was a fellow in Czechoslovakia.)
