Removing Transmission and Transfer Case. Will Engine need Supporting?
Hello Everyone.
I'm parting out my 1996.
If I remove the Transmission and t case first will the engine stay in place ok?
I am trying to remove as much as possible while it is still on the tires for safety reasons.
Once the axles and lift are removed I don't really want to be crawling around under there.
I should also add:
4L I6, AW4 Auto, NP242

On mine, there were zero issues when the engine was only supported by the right and the left engine mounts, with the transfer case / transmission / rear mount removed.
Use a transmission jack w/ safety chains when removing / replacing the transmission and the transfer case. Both are heavy and awkward when working under the vehicle.
Safety first.
Never, ever, ever work on a vehicle supported only by jacks.
Raise the vehicle then lower the appropriate frame locations onto solid jack stands. Work on a solid level surface. Block both sides of the far tires when lifting.

Thanks wingless. That's good news, and thanks for the safety tips.
Definitely blocking all 4 wheels and leaving them on the ground while under there with no driveshafts.

On my vehicle the chassis needed to be raised and set onto jack stands as-high as-possible and the detached transmission needed to be moved from the transmission jack to plywood setting on the ground, so that I could slide the transmission out from under the vehicle.
The front of the transmission has a large bell housing that must clear the side frame rails. Sliding on the ground was the only way I could remove this from under the vehicle.

i would support the engine, unless you don't care about the stock rubber engine mounts. they tear quite easily, especially if you have an oil leak and saturated the engine mounts.
