Default Removing rear shock question

Well I can't say how much I hate taking off the rear shocks.

i can't seem to fit a wrench on the top bolt for the shock.. I know the nut is a 13mm but I can't seem to fit a 13mm on the top.

Can anyone tell me what size it is and how to make this easier for me.

Try 1/2". Try 12 piont socket. Is the bolt mud caked?
