I got a new transmission,
I dont really mess with transmissions.. but I was wondering If I would be able to replace the transmission of my 99xj sport 4x4 by myself at home..
if anybody knows how to.. would you explain the procedures..
or if there is a write up.. what would I need? I can get a jack with a transmission thing adaptor..
let me know if this is possible.

yeah taking it out is easy if you have a motorcycle jack and it helps if you have a friend to help, best to replace it too, i tried rebuilding mine and i kinda wished i hadn't......
ok, i will try to get one, but my questions are
would I encounter any problems or struggles?
I dont know anything about installing or removing transmission
how about the contectors..
what should I unplug or plug and connect and disconnect what tools would i need?

yeah a motor cycle jack works good because most of us jeepers don't have lifts to be able to use transmission jacks and with a motorcycle jack its easy to control. you'll have to remove your shift linkage for your tranny and transfer case in you have four wheel drive, the starter, all of the electrical connections to the tranny/transfercase, remove cps connector, TV cable, speedo cable, take off the drive shafts, lower bell housing cover that is on the bottom of the bell housing then you can get to the four torque converter to flexplate mounting bolts by rotating the engine from the harmonic balancer with a breaker bar and 3/4 socket, remove the tranny fluid dipstick and cooler lines, then support the tranny with the jack and remove the two large engine to tranny bolts, at this point i like to lower the tranny a little to make it easier to get to the bolts up top, remove those and it should be ready to lower down all the way!

How about installing it back? just same thing?
should I just drain the new transmission and clean it.. then just revers procedures.. to install it?..

all you need for tools is some wrenches, wratchets and sockets, a jack and some jackstands nothing specialized, although when you get to the rotating the engine part a breaker bar REALLY helps! and the motorcycle jack makes it easy to maneuver the tranny around but i suppose you could do the job without one.

yeah drain it out and put a new filter in (are you putting in a junkyard tranny or a new/rebuilt one?) put the torque converter on the tranny FIRST and not the engine, because you have to get the TC to line up with the oil pump, just put it on and spin it to get it to seat, it will make a sort of "double clunk" and you will know it when it happens.Originally Posted by amunoz

because if it was a rebuilt one the trans filter would have likely already been replacedOriginally Posted by amunoz
