Default Removing e-brake cable

I need to pull the e-brake cable out of my D35 so I can run it to my new 8.25 when I swap it in. I have the brakes disassembled so the cable is now just sitting there. I read that I need to get a hose clamp and tighten down on the retainer, and this will allow the cable to slide right out of the backing plate, but I have not had time to stop by lowes and get one. So my question. Is that the way to do it? Or is there another/better/easier way? Thanks.

Pinch the fingers together and get one side started into the opening, as you get it started you can release the fingers that have gone into the opening and move the pliers to another set to pinch them and work the rest out by repeating the procedure as many times as needed. Once you start you'll get the idea.
