I recently removed the window trim frames from around my front and rear windows. They are supposed to be black coated but some of them have peeled either all the way or partially. So I have window trim frames with chrome on the bottom, black on top and a mix of both along the sides.

Is there an easy way of getting the black off or spraying them with some sort of paint that would not look odd because of the thickness difference between the bare chrome and the coated chrome? I started to try to remove with a razor blade but I thought there might be a better solution.

You have to start with the bottom strip and pull up. I ended up using a screw driver (covered the tip with a cloth and hammered the edge up. The bottom strip and window wipe come off together (most of the time). Then you can pull or tap the rest off fairly easily. Look at how the ends of each strip overlap and you'll know which to take off next.

 

I took off the black plastic around the windows like this: removed the strips around the window and used a high heat gun, one like you would use on heat shrink insulating tubing....it will make the black plastic soft enough to scrape it off with an exacto blade....then I used scotch brite to remove all the residue and buff up the chrome....it looks like brushed aluminum now. Then I took 3M polishing compound and rubbed it out till it shines like I want, and reinstalled the metal parts around the window and it looks great. hope this helps.
