Remote Control

I have a '96 ('95 built) Cherokee Sport 4.0L petrol AT w/ AC. On my remote, there are two button, Flat (R), Two dots (L). R locks the car, but the L does not do anything. Does anyone know how this remote works and how it can be reset to work again?

Is it the infrared version with the receiver mounted to the headliner, between the sun shades?
