ReGearing parts list
k ive been searching for a while and cant really figure out whats all need to regear. So far really to me all the parts seems to be in the range of around 500$ so why do most place say its gonna be around 1000$ in parts. Just hoping someone can show me some links with everything ill need to get the gears changed. Atm i got a hp30 and c8.25 in a manual 95. Gonna be going to 4.56-4.88 with some kind of locker. Thanks!

go to 4wheelparts and talk to them, they will hook you up. i got both my lockers, gears, master rebuild kits, and gear oil for under 1300 bucks for both axles!

if you open the diff cover, and look at the gears inside, you will have 1 big ring gear off to the left, and a carrier it is bolted to. they you have 4 little gears inside the carrier right in the middle that the shafts ride on, those are your spider gears, i have attached a pic for your convenience.

Not to Hijack the thread, but I am not following u on this. I also am wanting to do what the OP wants to do minus the regearing. So you are saying that if we have a 8.25 27spline shafts and want 29 all we have to do is slide the 27's out and slide the 29's in. How does this work. What do the splines connect to, the spider gears? Do the spider gears figure out that there is two more splines to play with and say to them selves, "Awesome two more splines". ??

what kind of lockers are we really talking about here? "lunchbox" lockers or automatic lockers start around $200 each. Slectable lockers (air/electric or manual) usually start around $500 each and go up from there. Then you might also be thinking about putting new bearings in while you have it that far apart, so I think they run about $150/each set. Upgrading to 29 spline shafts will require you to get a new carrier (which if going with a selectable locker you'll already be into anyway). Gear sets run about $200/each. And then there is labor to set up the gears properly.
So as you can see, it all depends on what and how far you want to go with it. Cheap: lunchbox type locker, gear set, keep old bearings and carriers. Moderate: lunchbox locker up front, JY 29 spline carrier and axle shafts with a selectable locker in the rear and new gears and bearings. Expensive: New HD axle shafts (inner/outer fronts and rears), new slectable lockers front and rear, new bearing sets, new ring gear sets front and rear. And labor will vary depending on which way you go.
Also, if you're thinking about 4.56 or 4.88 you must be running some large tires, which could mean that you will "need" to go the more expensive route just because you're putting a lot of stress on the parts running large tires (like 35" and up)

Well I'm planing on running 34x 10.5 ltbs, might just do 4.56. Think I'd rather got with selectable front and back as well, what's gonna be the beat brand? Also beat brand for gears?
