Rebuilt the engine in my 93 cherokee. After doing this some times it cranks great and runs excellent. The next time it it cranks ruff and bogs until I accelerate to 2300 rpm and the it clears up and runs fine. Then sometimes it won't crank at all just skips and spits. Any ideas would be great. I have put in a new cps, distributor,iac, tps, fuel pressure reg, new filter, it don't have a cat, and It has new wires, plugs, coil. I am at a lost. Please help.

Is the CPS wire secured away from the exhaust manifold? If resting on manifold it will cause this

 

I wouldn't admit to not having a cat around here if I were you.

Another little thing. You say it won't crank but it spits and sputters. If it spits and sputters, it IS cranking, just not firing properly.

 

So the reason it does not have a cat is because in the beginning I was thinking that it was my problem. It was stopped up but the issue is still there.... I have a new exhaust system waiting to be put in but wanted to fix one issue at a time.... As for the CPS wire it is tied up away from the exhaust. Your right it is cranking just not firing like it should. The thing that confuses me the most is the whole accelerating to 2300 rpm it does this ever time if it is running improperly, once you do that it runs great. Until I cut it off again and try to crank it back... Sometimes it starts right up and the next it just bogs and has no power.

 

Test fuel pressure.

 

Roll engine to top dead center number 1 and pull the distributor cap after marking the location of cyl 1 pol directly below the cap on the distributor. Is the rotor at, slightly before, or slightly after the cylinder 1 pole?

I think you simply have the indexing incorrect on the distributor

On a 93 the cat is behind the O2 sensor. The only thing not having the cat on it would do is mildly reduce back pressure. That wont be his problem.

Why is that? I can understand on vehicles that have to fall under current emissions controls, but once they are a certain age, in most areas, they become exempt and it doesn't matter anymore.

 

Talking about eliminating cats is grounds for banning on this forum according to CF's rules.

AFAIK, Federal Law mandates the use of cats if the vehicle was originally equipped with it/them for use on public streets or highways. It never expires.

 

Well it shouldn't be grounds for banning if someone is talking about putting an old V8, even in a vehicle that might have been equipped originally with a "cat" and a different engine entirely. That's the thing once a vehicle is deemed to be "Historic" or "Antique," varies from state to state. In my experience, only the oldest of engines that were never designed to have one run worth a damn without one, anyway.

 

Removing a catalytic converter for diagnosis on an older, non obd2 system as a form of diagnosis is NORMAL practice, and it is off for that purpose, as he has stated.


Rather than getting your panties in a twist, how about you offer some insight to the problem.
