rebuild trans??
ive got about 244k miles on what i believe to be the original motor and trans in my 92 cherokee 4.0 ive noticed the trans is starting to make noises and such. when i shift from park to reverse or drive i can hear a banging sound coming from underneath and the whole vehicle jerks around. that and when i go to take off or im cruising and hit the gas i hear a thud coming from the back end. i drained and replaced the trans fluid because it was brown. is it going bad or is it just age?? this thing has got to last me a while longer.

Did you notice any metal shavings or think material in the fluid?did it smell burnt. Transmission fluid will only go bad if it is exsposed to overheating, being brown does not mean your trany is going bad,but it is sign you need to watch it closley.
Has the shifting changed,better,or worse?
Mine shifts hard when I put in reverse, but it does not concern me.

sorry everyone been out of town. so i climbed underneath today and took this pic. im taking a guess but im assuming that this isnt good. when i changed trans fluid, there was no evidence of metal shavings or anything metallic, the fluid was just burned. also there is some play in u joints in both shafts
Sounds like a bad trans mount. With that many miles on it. I would have NOT changed the fluid, you most likely ensured you will be rebuilding your transmission now. With that many miles on a trans, often the only thing holding the clutch discs together is the varnish and build up. Changing the fluid, removes that, and loosens all the tolerances up. It is the main reason, most shops will not flush a transmission without a written waiver saying if it takes a **** when you leave, tough on you.
