What's your final plan? Winch, 6 Lights, extra stereo components? If any of this is in the build plan, go new or go bigger. Mean Grenen makes some great upgraded alts

Yeah, its easier to just buy one upgraded for your needs. i used to rebuild a buggy full of gm and ford alternators and starters after school. i had all the tools to bead blast them clean and paint and sand the rotor and stator and test each part. Also i had all the supplies needed for new parts inside, that made it easy. I can do it but i would rather just go buy a new one and be done. If yours is bad you dont have a way to test the stator or the rotor anyway

Rebuilding due to failure, or overhauling for more power?

Assuming it's the rig in your sig (please don't make us assume. Remember the old saying - "To ASSUME is to make an *** of U and ME...") then you have the Nippondenso alternator that was common to Jeep 1991-up (and Chrysler from the mid-1980's.) Parts aren't readily available for the thing, which is a stumbling block.

You would probably have better luck if you just source a higher-output donor for your swap. I know I've posted a partial donor list (UNCONFIRMED) on at least a couple of the boards I'll list below, and I'm working on a fuller one (with more details than I have already.) However, you can get up to 160A with some grinding and fitting - just make sure to upgrade your cabling (link in sig.)

Places to look for the donor list (since I don't remember where I've put it...)

NAXJA - www.naxja.org
JeepForum - www.jeepforum.com
CherokeeForum (you're here)
CherokeeTalk - www.cherokeetalk.com
JeepStrokers - www.jeepstrokers.com

I'm "5-90" on all boards, so that should make your search a little easier (start by searching for "alternator donors" filtered by my moniker.)

You're starting (assuming again - I so dislike having to "assume" anything...) with a 90A alternator, most likely. So, there's definitely room for improvement!
