Rebirth of Banjo, the '01 XJ
I'm in the process of putting a 1999 motor in my 2001 XJ, I know that I need to put on my coil packs (I got that covered) and cam sensor. My question is if there's any special thing I need to do to get the cam sensor in right, like do I need to make sure any cylinder is at TDC or anything?

Rotate the engine by hand so that cylinder one is at TDC after the compression stroke. I just stuck my finger over the spark plug hole and when I felt compression, I knew it was the right part of the stroke. Then I lined up the timing mark on the harmonic balancer with the 0 mark on the timing cover.
Next, you take the cam sensor off of the shaft. You stick a toothpick or small drill bit in the small hole and rotate the inner part of the drive unit so that the toothpick goes through both holes and holds it in place and does not rotate.
Insert the drive unit into the block so that it engages with the camshaft gear.
Tighten the bolt on the block that holds that drive unit in, re-install the sensor. You should be good to go.
I have just gone through this a few different times. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!
I can send a snapshot of the Factory service manual walk through if you would like too, it explains it a little better than I can.

I went through the computer reset process after I installed my new engine. It took a whole for it to re-learn everything so it might run rough for a little bit but it should smooth right out if your sensors are all working properly.

Did you change heads with it.. The exhaust manifolds from the 99 are different than the 2001. The bolt patern is the same but the ports are different on the 99.

SpruceJedi, thank you! That looks pretty straightforward, I'll definitely reset the computer when I hear it run
Red82, I thought about that, but decided that it'd be easier to deal with the mechanical aspects of the engine rather than the electrical, at least for me, I'm used to dealing with older cars that don't have as complex of a wiring harness
565matt, I'm using the one from the '99 motor, I know the ports are bigger, as soon as I get money to do it, I'm ordering a Banks header to deal with it, I've read that the problem is (almost) solvable with the gasket from the 2001 motor

That I do not know. If you order your RR header from 4ws.com it's like 160$. You can usually work free shipping too.
Not sure about torque conv.

That's awesome, I will probably end up with that since it's cheaper & looks just as good, your motor looks great by the way! Love the orange!
I'll have to ask around about the torque converter
