rear window defroster help
Hey guys I have a 1998 xj without a rear defroster (quite lame if you ask me) Anyways I realize that the wires are already there.... My question is, could I go to the jy and get another rear glass and the switch and install it and it will work? Is it really that easy? Or am I missing something here?

I've searched several times...... Even before I became a member..... All the reasults have come up with something other than what I what I had intended to find. There is a wealth of information on this site here. Been able to diagnosis problems I've had and fixed annoyances as well. I'm kinda wondering if I need a relay too but idk if I do or not...... It's the only hurdle I haven't been able to cross with my XJ. I love it otherwise.... Thanks for everything....

Wow, no rear defrost? That's odd. Do you have a switch for it?
At any rate... I don't have my Haynes handy but there will definitely be a relay to run this. Good news is that all the wiring will be present, you might need to tear apart the back hatch to find it though.

I think it's pretty straight forward. His rear window doesn't have the line on them for the defrost but his jeep appears to have the hook ups for it. Like as if someone had broken the rear window (which had the lines) and got it replaced with a new one (without the lines). I would say if you could find a window with the defrost there is no reason (I could think of) it would not work correctly.

I'm assuming it came off the line that way. Nowhere in my built sheet does it mention it. So no P.O. fun there.... There isn't even a switch there...... My XJ is as base as it comes. Winter was fun at time's because of it.

Took my stereo bezel off and then removed the three screws and I saw all the plugs for the rear defroster and I'm assuming fog lights.... So which is wich?

Look for the Rear Window Defogger Relay in the Junction Block. It's supposed to be at the bottom just forward of the rows of mini fuses. The fuse for the relay control coil is in the JB, F12 (10A), the third position up from the bottom on the forward row of mini fuses. The relay contactor power fuse is in the PDC, F11 (30A), it's the 3rd one up from the bottom in the right row of maxi fuses (as you look at the PDC from the grill).

There's a 10 amp fuse in the jb but nothing in the pdc. So if I'm understanding you correctly all I would need is the glass, switch and the maxi fuse? My XJ came without an owners manual......

Thanks for all the information btw CCKen. Now that I have a definitive parts list together I can hit the jy. All I've gotta do is find some cash now lol.

No it's not there either. Sorry I neglected to mention that. But that project is on the back burner for now. I'm having tranny issues. She's in the shop now getting looked at. Thanks for everything though.

Rear Defroster Problem
Thanking CCKen for his spot on info. Worked for me.

Ready for the snow. Now I know what to look for in the Haynes manual.
