Default Rear Shocks, Hard to Believe

Went to have the shocks replaced on my 2k Sport. No big thing. Shop calls me in for a look see. Hmmm, the upper part of the rear shock is welded to the body of the Jeep! The mechanic tells me that area of the Jeep mount is a poor design and he's worked on them but not welded to the chassis! Seen it before? Suggestions on how to fix? Thanks

Sounds like someone tried to take the shocks off before and broke the upper bolt holding the bar pins to the cross member. Common issue- pretty much a given if you try and remove the shocks. Who ever did it, welded them back on. You're going to have to grind through the weld and reattach the new shocks with some kind of BPE.

Wow...thats going to an extreme.

All 4 upper bolts broke on mine. I drilled them out. I didn't bother with an easy out, but probably could have.

I did the next easy fix...cut 4 holes in the interior floor to access the backside of the upper shock mount. Over drilled the welded nuts and used bolts instead. Worked like a charm.

You will need to grind off the welds to get the shocks out. Good luck.

x2 what the others are saying. Only way to do it is grind off the welds and install some BPE's ( bar pin eliminators). Put some on my cherokee and they work like a charm.

OP welded the shocks on my previous Jeep, had to cut the bar pin out with a grinder/sawzall and replaced with bar pin eliminators.

havent tried this personally but once you get the old bar pin out, you could weld one of these in and still be able to replace your shocks in the future

X2 on welding in a bar pin eliminator. The only thing is, you have to have a savvy shock man because he can't look them up by application anymore. If he can't figure it out for you , I can give you some shock numbers

Did this on mine and works great and don't have to worry about breaking mount bolts anymore.
