Default Rear seal related

99' Cherokee sport, 4.0L, Auto, stock

I did a rear main seal search but did not find anyting thing related to my question. If I missed, let me know.

Anyway, I'm about to attack the rear main seal on my Cherokee here in about a week (I've done the rear main on a F250 so I'm sure I can do this). A buddy sent me a message saying the 4.0 has a habit of 'gouging' the shaft which would cause even a new rear main seal to leak.

Has anybody experienced this or heard the same thing?
If this is a common issue, and I'm not saying it's happening to my Cherokee, is there a fix besides letting it leak or putting in a new shaft? (ugh).

Thanks,

Unless you're WAY more ham-fisted than I am, you shouldn't have any issues. I had to do one in an 01 Grand. Not too difficult. Didn't even have to lift the motor to get the pan off, just dropped the panhard bar in the front. Getting the top half out can be a beeyotch. I dropped the stud girdle and loosened all of the main cap bolts. That seemed to help free up the old seal.

The crank sealing surface should be hardened so I'd be hard pressed to expect damage from the seal that would cause a new one to leak.

Thanks for the link. I found a very similar link when I did the F250 rear main seal.

I'll touch base in a little over a week after I tackle this.

Default rear main

This is my first post on this forum. I did my rear main last week and it is still leaking, so I was searching for a good write up to see what I did wrong.

There are about a dozen write ups on the internet and this one seems to be the best. Actually, this is the first one I saw that showed to use the anerobic sealer!!!!

Of course since I am writing this, I obviously didnt use the anaerobic stuff which I am hoping is my problem. I will tackle this again this week hopefully, I think I will also use a new seal just in case I messed that one up in the process

WTF!!!!!

oh well,

this seems like a pretty decent forum, hope to see you guys around

Chuck

I got mine in with no problem. I used the permatex anaerobic gasket, and at the moment I am leak free!!!
