It's kinda like a contact cement.
Very sticky and when applied on a clean surface it will hold the gasket in place so when your putting the pan in place it doe'st move on you.

take a 1/4 or 3/8 extension and tap it with a hammer in the aera thats leaking should stop tap on the lip of the pan tap not beat

I've always used Napa Weatherstripping Glue tohold stubborn gaskets in place while installing them. Works pretty good

i just did mine on a 92. i remember reading the instructions for the RMS and it said for the newer Xjs you have to use a lot of rtv to fill up the gaps? I threw the instructions out but this could be your problem?
