rear main thought i nailed it but.....
Ill inspect the rms again. With the one piece gasket for the oil pan. Where exactly do you need to put rtv? I have a feeling that the pan seal in tje bearing cap didn't get into the groove on the cap.

i was thinking the same about the pan gasket, as to what someone else has asked I will be doing the RMS again just because I will already be in to it and a couple more things to undo from that point aint nothing.

Pulled the pan tonight the seal at the bearing cap was nit situated correctly. I have picks if needed. Clean all gasket material off very good. Will clean block on Thursday. New gasket no rtv and up and in. Amazed at how fast this goes after you've done it before
Regarding the silicon felpro one piece gasket. The instruction say to use silicon at the corners. Whete exactly are they talking about? And does the rtv go under the gasket on the pan or on the top of the gasket to mate to the block?
I got a 89 w/ 4.0 and removed the pan today to replace rear main seal and gasket. I would like to find the guy that decided to use whatever they use for a gasket sealer and give him a whoopin. That is the worst stuff I have ever tried to get off.Got a 1 piece felpro to go back with if I ever get the block clean. Thanks for all the info on here, it sure made the job easier for my first time.

Yea this sucks, I just did my RMS myself on my 01 and leaks worse then it did before!!, this aint my first RMS on a 4.0 Jeep either so I am guessing I buggered up the rear of the pan gasket, was a real PITA doing it from jackstands and on a stock height Jeep. will be redoing in a couple weekeds but this time I am going to undo the motor mounts and try to get an inch or so lift out of the engine THEN put it on jackstands.
Other RMS jobs have been a 1990 Cherokee 94 YJ and a 95 ZJ, guess I have a 75% success rate.

beat me to it. I was going to recommend Hi tack too.
It's kinda like a contact cement.
Very sticky and when applied on a clean surface it will hold the gasket in place so when your putting the pan in place it doe'st move on you.
