Why does everyone else say put it on the ends of the seal and how would putting sealant there actually seal?
it wouldn't.. does it recommend pushing the seal past matting surface? so the gap is actually not at same place the cap and block mate.. ? Kinda like this picture.. not a jeep block.. but you can see the seal is not at same place matting surface is..

Took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about.

Only what you see in the picture.
I was referencing Haynes, Chiltions, write-ups, and a few videos. Only this paper strangely goes out of its way to say otherwise
Also, it has the tabs, so it couldnt overlap anyway.
ok .. where the two surfaces meet on the block.. those have to be perfectly clean.. anything in between there would give you a gap and bearing failure.. now.. the ends of the caps where the arrow is pointing.. on the OUTSIDE so to say there is a gap between block and cap.. you can put a bead of sealant in that gap.. it must be 100% clean tho.. no oil residue
NOW on the picture i posted.. you see the seal in the block and the cap? even tho its not a jeep engine see how the seal is not flush with the matting surface? it is down 1/2 in and sticking out a half inch on other end? that is to put the mating surfaces of the two seals, the upper and lower seal.. in a spot that is not flush with the matting surface of the block and cap so it does not leak..it is easy to do..

Looks like you have the newer gasket and should follow these instructions. Make sure you have the correct seal with the two tabs that stick off the lower part of the seal https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/rea...-4-0-a-227737/
