Default rear main seal home repair

How difficult is a rear main seal repair? My co worker was a Jeep tech. and says I can do it without having to drop the tranny or raise the motor. Any elaboration?

Gotta pull the oil pan. Depending on age some suggest replacing the oil pump while your there.

The more lift you have the easier it will likely be. Assuming that's your rig in your avatar, you shouldn't need to put it on jacks. You may want to remove the SS from the drag link, though. The front of the pan tends to get hung up there and makes it a *****.

I'd verify the leak is indeed the RMS first. Almost every leak from a 4.0 ends up dripping off the RMS area for 2 reasons: It's the lowest point and the engine sits "nose-high" in the engine bay. Therefore, a leaky valve cover gasket at the rear, oil filter adapter seals failed, oil sender leaking, dizzy gakset leaking, all mimmick a RMS leak. All of those things combined are easier to fix than a RMS.
