Bolts
The bottom just pops off but the top you remove the two bolts on each side. The correct new ones come with the bracket on them. I have to replace mine, they wont hold the lift gate up when its cold.

On my '92, the "top" and "bottom" are the same. [I put them in quotes, since the top is bottom and bottom is top when you open the hatch.] Both have a metal wire clip; once you've put the ball [on the hatch or frame] into the socket [on the strut], the straight end of the clip fits through a hole in the socket, and then the curled end snaps around the body of the strut. Actually pretty clever.
But if people are talking about metal brackets, then some models are different than others.
