Ok so I have been reading and gaining insight so now the questions start, I have an '87 patriot in line 6 auto transmission , how do I find out wich rear axle, transfercase, front axle are under it. and maybe some opinions on what are the best combinations, I don't plan on doing major rock crawling but I also have a 14 year old son who will be getting a licesnse soon so boys will be boys and it needs to hold up to him and his yahoo friends that spent last weekend jumping a broncoII over irrigation ditches.

I cant find the link with pics but, the dana 35 has a 2.75ish inch axle tube and a threaded drain/fill plug and the 8.25 has a 3 inch axle tube and a push in plug. The t case should have a tag on it. Also look at the diff and it may say dana on it. Hope this helps any
you can also tell which transfercase you have by looking at the shift pattern. if it has full time 4wd then its the np242 if it only has part time 4wd than its the np231.
this should help you with the rear differential: http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...and_Ratios.htm
