Ever check parts cost on a track-lock? if you find one the discs are probly worn out...$$$$ imo, why bother?

It'll take you a few days to do all the reading required for an answer to that question. There are so many variables to satisfy first...some are:

1. What is your rig equipped with.
2. What do you use it for.
3. How much money do you have.
4. What are your skills (mechanically or otherwise)
5. How much time do you have to REALLY use Google/ CF search to satisfy all your answers.

I scoured through this and other jeep/xj forums long before I signed up....like 2 years. There is SO MUCH info on here your eyes will probably start bleeding in the first few weeks.

I'm not saying I won't help you, just take the time to build a good knowledge base and you'll be laughing, sooner than you think. You'll be a guru...

I'm glong to kinda have to agree.

We dont know what you do with this truck, if its your daiily driver or not, if you drive it in the snow since your in NY, what size tires, what rear you currently have, etc...

Your basically asking a question that has too many answers, none of them less correct than the other because we just dont know...

Thank you guys for your responses sorry I was so vague....I have a 96 with the command trac t case....open rear diff right now....2" lift with 31x10.5.....daily driven thru snow ice etc and taken on the beach often (avid fisherman)....basically I wanted to"sure-up" the rear end....I also tow occasionally....i'm an aviation technician who started in automotive so I have the tools and have the needed skills (done a few rear ends before...and a Jeep rear) and i'm looking to find out exactly how much I need to budget....I literally need help with what direction to go with the rear

do you have abs or no?

i would just install a cheap lunchbox locker instead of swapping out the whole rear end.

If you have the cash a selectable locker is the way to go.

A lunch box locker would be the least expensive option and provide the best bang for the buck. Easy installation, no special tools or skills required.

Also:
96 was the year that Chrysler made the switch from 27 spline to 29 spline shafts in the 8.25" axle.

The only way to know for certain which you have is to pull one of the shafts and count the splines.

Do not buy anything until you know what you have.
