Ok a couple of months ago I changed all the fluids in the front diff and rear diff along with transfer case and flushed the trans.
I noticed when I changed the front and rear diffs the fluid was different.
Now when I drive the rear end makes noise when I am on the throttle when let off it goes away.
Is it time for a new ring and pinion.

Thanks

Wow lots of mileage. What kind of fluid did you put back in. And it is not hard to pull the cover and inspect. Run a magnet through the fluid if you got metal shaving then something is wrong.
Can you rotate your rear DS any with your hand while the vehicle is parked.
Since it has to do with Pressing your throttle I would stick to your driveshaft and Diff at the minute.
Would love to have more info if possible
I just read you flushed the trans... I have heard that is a no-no on high mileage vehicles. hmmmm
Well we have a lot of tech savy guys here that love to help some one will chime in here in a few and prolly give you a better solution

ya, check for that. sounds like a pinion bearing starting to go. you can put it on jack stands and have someone put it in gear and get it up to around 40-50 mph. put a screwdriver up to the rear diff and put your ear on the screw driver, see if the noise is coming out of there.
after that pull the cover. maybe the rear fluid looked different cuz it was full of metal shavings? which is usually just bad bearings.

Thanks for the info. I am also experiencing the so called death wobble.
She has a lot of mileage but runs strong and still average's 17 mpg around town.
I am not sure if it has limited slip or not. I think it does. I don't recall what diff fluid I used maybe that created the problem. I though maybe it had some Lucas mixed in to quiet it down from the previous owner.
The trans is perfect no problems I think you don't change fluid on a slipping trans. Because it can make it go out but this is a Toyota trans its good.
I am going to drive her until at least 300 k.
I don't think it is a pinion bearing had one of those go out before on another car I had totally different noise. Well unfortunately I cant get to look at her until next weekend just looking for idea's thanks guys.

Another thing to take a look at is the tranny Mount. I know when I first got my waggie there was a knocking in the rear and it turned out to be the tranny mount was worn. Just an Idea. That could give you some play on acceleration and some unusual sounds.

ya and as far as xj trans, i wouldn't ever hesitate to service the trans regardless. that is a great trans, and its always better to service it than not. if you don't service it eventually it will go bad. if its going bad, service can help, or speed up the fault. its about 50/50. but, if its going bad its going bad. so service it anyway. if it works, you saved your trans.
thats just how i look at it.

i just remembered on one of my 4 xj's i've owned, i had one with a bearing noise in the back, i replaced every bearing and still never fixed the noise. the noise was minor, and i drove it like that for about 25k , and sold it for what i bought it for, after driving it for about 50k. the jeep had about 160k when i sold it. i love xj's.
Differential noises that change with load are most often pinion bearings but with the milage I would replace all the bearings and seals and take a long look at the gears. If a bearing is truly bad, the gears have seen shavings and may also be damaged.
