Default rear end help

I took my 99' classic in and they said my pinion and carrage bearings are worn and they quoted me 850$ for a full bearing kit replacement. I dont want to spend 850$ dollars. I thought about attempting this job myself but it is my daily driver and I need it for work so ripping apart the rear end is only an option if I can definitely complete the task over a weekend. My questions, have any of you done a pinion bearing yourself? If so how difficult was it and what special tools were required? For the price should I just go to a you pull it yard and pull a complete assembly? Isn't it easier to bolt on a complete axle than dig into the differential? Maybe the most important question, how long can I drive the Jeep as is? There is no play in the drive shaft at all, I hear a light grind at slow speeds, o bit of a whine up to 50 and nothing at highway speed. Do I need to act fast or should I be safe for a while? I know its alot of reading and a ton of ?'s, I apologize for that but really need some good advice. Thanks for your time and input.
