1st post in years, my XJ ate a bearing in the rear differential a couple of days ago. Its an 8.25 w/ 307 gearing ( yes a 5 speed) It chewed it up real bad so I was wanting to swap it out but for some reason they are very hard to find in Ventura area. lots of Dana 35s and they want top dollar for those? has anybody heard of Jeeps parts depot in Sun Valley? they say they have a few at $500.00 a pop. any help would be appreciated.
BTW its a 95 xj w/ a 4.0
5 speed

The ratio is the issue. Not many 5 speeds made compared to the number made with automatics which used the 3.55 ratio.
If you have ever thought of regearing, now is the time. Grab a 3.55 front and rear end from the yard?
Put your 3.07 front end on craigslist...

im totally willing to do that. found a place about 65 miles from me that has one. its $500 .00 though ( ouch) going to run out there tomorrow and check it out. hopefully they'll let me pull the cover off and the breaks are not complete garbage.
BTW Cruiser you've helped more with your knowledge over the years than I can ever thank you for.

And thanks for the kind words.

No I'm only doing the rear for now.. to close to the holidays to spend that much $$. So no 4wd until after new years. To be honest not looking forward to doing the front. Might as well change my ball joints and control arms. Been putting that off for a while.Originally Posted by cruiser54

Ya I have talk to them before but why don't you just replace the bearings in the axle you have now , I have talked to Jeeps parts depot in Sun Valley before because I'm looking for a 8.25 rear axle because mine has a Dana 35 , they seam like they are ok but you will be getting used parts and I would want to replace all the bearings so I know that they are in good shape . The 3.55 gear would help if you have larger tires .

it looks good everything spins nicely it still has the paper sticker with the bar code from chysler on it. Plus it's a 29 spine. They gave me a good price and cash discount. They seem like good guys. I'll probably be getting rid of my old one.

Can I see a picture? have you found the solution to your bearing?

They don't want the old one as a core?
That's cool either way. Perhaps someone with the drive and experience to rebuild a rear axle will buy it from you!!

No the place I bought it at said they had too many of them, I'm hanging on to my old one for a bit. When I took the cover off to inspect the gears, I noticed the ring gear had the number -048- written on it. The gears look perfect. Could that mean someone put 4.88 gearing in it? If so I'll sell it or trade it. I'm never going to put 35in. tires on it. How would I check to make sure l have 3.55s in it?

The pinion should also have a number stamped in it. If you divide the 2 numbers, it will tell you the gear ratio. But 48 sounds right for a 3.55. You could also spin the pinion by had 3.5 times and see if it rotates the axles one full rotation.
Got it at jeep depot in Sun Valley. I did count the teeth on both ring and Pinon it equaled 3.545. Which is nice considering doing a complete brake job. Still it would have been nice to stoke someone out with a trade. Any secrets to the parking brake cable clip that goes through the backing plate. I want to use the ones on the jeep. The cables that came on the 2000 are different than the ones on a 1995
