Default rear drums wearing out fast!!

Ok so I had my rear brakes done about 6 months ago by my buddy. He owns a shop and I trust his knowledge and workmanship. I recently put some new tires on the xj and they informed me that the rear brakes are down to 2mm.

When the brake job was done my friend installed new hardware, springs, new shoes, and had the drum turned.

What would cause them to wear out so fast??

Are the front brakes working as they should? Drive with the parking brake on much?

what size tires are you running?
running bigger tires & wheels than stock leads to a lot of extra unsprung weight & rotating mass and really punishes the stock brakes.

i went thru 2 sets of front brake pads in 10k miles.. but to be fair my jeep spent every other day offroad and i romp pretty fast and slam the brakes pretty hard.
but still i was only on 31's.

also if u go mudding a lot, mud easily gets in there and beats everything to hell if u dont wash it out.

I'm currently running 235/75/15.

This jeep has never been in the mud and rarely goes off road, only dirt trails on camping trips once a year.

I'm not sure what brand was put on when it was worked on but I'm sure it was oem spec. My friend wouldn't set me up for failure. We've been in the Army reserve together for over a decade and on a deployment. Maybe the pressure to the front brakes isn't as much a it should be. To my knowledge everything in the front is original with the exception of the passenger side rotor.

I've been toying with the idea of putting on new calipers up front and possibly a new master cylinder.

Thanks to u both!! just a thought we all have them we trust... Do the back breaks hit harder than the front (ie dirt/slick road)?

I'm not really sure. I'm not on slick roads very often but I can test that since I live in the desert

At slow speeds on paved roads I can hear some squealing from the rear when breaking. Thats probably due to the worn shoes, correct?

Sounds rear brakes might be over adjusted causing them to drag. Makes for good braking power but wear the shoes quickly.

This can be from installation or backing up alot while pumping the brakes
