They call it the Dana Turdy-Five for a reason. That axle has earned it's bad reputation. Even if you have a mint D35, junk it in favor of an 8.25, for peace of mind.

Number of splines on the axle shafts, the axle came in 2 versions: 27 spline for 95 and older; 29 for 96 and newer. Everyone around here shuns the 27 spline b/c its "weaker" than the other but both are same. People will argue this all day but ive ran a locked 27 spline on 35's with no issues, both are the same.

No difference in external physical size, it will bolt up and fit perfectly. Also I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet but I heard since the 8.25 has a longer pinion you may need a shorter driveshaft.

Pop the cover off, pull the bolt out that holds the cross pin. Remove the cross pin, remove the c clips then slide the axle shaft out and count its splines

The entire differential rarely goes bad, it's usually the bearings that wipe out first. But the '35 is a light duty axle, for what you'd pay to overhaul it, the Chrysler swap is a better deal.

Are you sure there isn't a u-joint problem? Something hitting the rear axle over bumps and while breaking...like the exhaust?
