Agree! Looks like your mechanic thinks he found a "sucker". As for the noise it's making, that can be your brake shoes and drums. When was the last time they were replaced? Do you have any friends who can help you look? What about other jeepers in your area?

Brakes were just replaced. Brakes wouldn't explain the noose when I hit a small bump tho

I would inspect the damage myself before taking the word of a mechanic. Even if you have to replace the axle you can buy one from a JY for a couple hundred dollars. No, they don't have to be new. Yes, the 8.25 will bolt right in without any modifications.

A 1997 or newer Jeep Cherokee has the 29 spline 8.25 (the one you want). Here's a pic of the axle covers.

Also, the 8.25 will have a noticeable flat spot on the bottom. You can't miss it.

Those holes are on the cover. your junkyard 8.25 will come with a cover on it. no issue there. if you remove those bolts for the cover, thats where the fluid is. Just mentioning cuz u said u didnt realize a rearend had fluid anywhere. thought u would like to know where it is! lol. also under that cover is all your gears and whatnot. just some info, none of that has to do w the swap between D35 and 8.25.

dONT LISTEN TO MOST MECHANIC Deferentially WHEN YOUR A YOUNG GUY. Some guy wanted to charge me 600$ as well for some noises i was getting from my rear . he said my axle was done. i replaced some brake parts and fixed the noise that HE SAID was my diff. Get other opinions man! instead of paying 600$ i did it for 30$ and saved me alot of money.

By the way. When I'm looking at this c8.25 any signs I should be checking for. Rule of thumb to check flood what is it. Just don't to buy a bad one and it be a waste of money and time
