Default Rear Diffrential. fml.

Mechanixlc says whole rear is gone. I have a 94 jeep Cherokee with 31' x 10.50's with 3 inch lift. I don't do many trails. Mostly hauling boats. Trailers. Ridding on farms for hunting. Mechanic says Dana35. What do you think? Mecahnic says 600 for whole rear. I'm doing it myself. How much will it be? Where should I buy it from. Thanks so much guys......

8.25 doesn't have abs tho. Shouldn't I buy it new. My mechanic says they go bad often

Who needs abs? Lol

What goes bad often? A beat, unmaintained d35?

I'd go junkyard hunting for a 97+ 29 spline c 8.25 and not look back, many used axles can be had fairly cheap and still live a long time with the proper care.

I can usually pick up a whole axle for $150 -$300 from a J/Y.
And X2 if you have a D35 you might as well get a 8.25.
The main reason I've seen these go bad is from lack of fluid.

I have an 8.25 and live in a city where winter is like 5 months out of the year, I have never needed ABS. I actually feel ABS interferes a lot.

^This.

What made you go to the mechanic? Did you SEE what's bad in there?

Sounds like you need a second opinion from someone who will give you a little more of an explanation.

Not to thread jack but still on topic, what would be a sign the outer d35 axle bearings are bad, my seals are not leaking.

How much would all that cost new. Any chance a D35 driveshaft will hook up to a 8.25

And would there be a chance only part of my rear is bad. Not the hole thing. when I hit my breaks it makes a bad grind noise and when I hit a bump it makes the same noise. Coming from rear

How bout you find out what your mechanic means when he says it's "shot". Does it drive roughly? Does it make a bunch of noise back there when you're driving? I just hope you aren't throwing hundreds of dollars to a cash hungry mechanic for a repair that isnt needed.

edit: Posted right as you posted the above. That noise you are describing could be as simple as your rear brakes needing replacement, not the entire axle. If you don't have a friend in the area that can help you out, take it for a second opinion at a different shop. And you should never buy an axle new, ESPECIALLY a Dana turdy-five. Take a look at your brakes, that's where it sounds like your problem lies.
