Default Rear differential vent blowing fluid

Do I have a problem? After changing rear differential (Dana 35) to synthetic 75w-140 gear lubricate it is blowing a bit out of the axle/diff vent ( rubber hose line that goes from rear brake line block / axle vent into unibody frame). I filled it until it was running out and put the rubber filler plug in. After about two weeks of driving it is not blowing out as much, just a few drops on the drive which is enough to PO the wife. The fluid level is now about 1/2 inch below the hole. I think it will stop soon as it gets down to a happy level and its ok, but should I be worried I have a problem or could I be causing a problem with seals?

k... but do you have anything useful to say?
Everyone knows the d35 sucks, but he wasnt asking about that.
He was asking if blowing fluid was ok, not if he should get rid of the rear end.
If its a DD, which it looks like by his specs then its not that big of a problem.

PO, about your fluid problem. Im not sure, but it should be fine

Your answer doesn't help anyone, especially the OP. He has a specific problem with a specific axle. If you don't have a usefull reply....why bother?

Pull the vent tube off and make sure it's clean all the way thru. Spray some carb and choke cleaner into the check valve too.

140 is pretty heavy and is only recommended (by Dana) for axles that see "Extreme Duty". Do you really need to run that heavy of an oil? Synthetic has it's uses, but if you're wheelin' in water/soupy mud you might want to consider a less expensive alternative since you'll be changing the oil more frequently. Don't believe the hype about sythetic gear oil, it really isn't performing any miracles in your axles. BTDT.

I completely agree. Finny if you have nothing constructive to say stay out of the thread. You didn't answer his question at all. I'd suggest you chill out.

I have a D35 with upgraded 30 spline axles and an ARB. Before someone jumps all over this, I bought the XJ with that installed and no I probably wouldn't have spent all that money on a D35, but I'll wheel it and see how it does.

Back to the point, in the ARB installation manual it states that some D35's don't have a good oil passage from the axle tubes back into the pumpkin. They recommend using a dremel tool and cutting a passage on each side under the bearing race to allow the oil to drain better.

Like Frank said, using a lighter oil would help in your case.

Thanks for all the advice. I use my 2001 XJ for hunting and fishing, don't do any extreme off-roading. I put the Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-140 in because I tow a 2800lb boat as far as 300 miles several times a year and the owners manual recommended it. I will try cleaning out the check valve and if that doesn't solve the problem I'll change to a 75w-90 gear oil. Since I just dropped the cover and inspected, hopefully I can just suck out the 75W-140 and replace with 75w-90.

Clean out the vent as suggested. Make sure it's still connected to the frame. Make sure the hose is in good shape (not collapsing or clogged).

Definitely make sure it isn't over full.

sounds to me like you over filled the diff.. ive heard that your only supposed to fill up the diff till its about 1/2-1in below the fill plug.. so it could be over filled.

Update: I drove my XJ about 10 miles, pulled into yard and pulled the fill plug. Fluid came running out, looks like I over filled it. I also cleaned out the tube and check valve with break cleaner. It was about 30 degrees when I filled it, I guess gear lube must really expand when it is warmed up. Hopefully letting fluid drain out will solve my issue. Thanks again for all the good feedback.

When you changed the fluid and did the refill, was the Jeep on level ground?

Yes, it was level, but it was 30deg F and I pumped in fluid / filled it until it was running out and jammed in the plug. I'm pretty sure I just overfilled it, next few days will tell.
