Default Rear differential problem

Got a clunk, clunk clunk noise coming from rear when reversing or going forward slowly especially from standstill. Can't pinpoint to a particular wheel. Just at the rear area. Your thoughts please.

Ok. Do you know how to tell the difference between D35 and Chrysler 8.25? From what it sounds like so far, it sounds to me like a LSD with some worn clutches.

Could be u-joints on the rear shaft. Time to poke your noggin under the Jeep and have a gander.

Yeah more than likely it has a LSD in it and the additive has broken down or worn out. Mine has the same problem. The clutches are worn out in the LSD and they're not engaging.

Looked at exploded diagram of axle. Is it a lot of work to replace clutches and u joints.

My bet would be driveshaft U-joints or Tranny mount. Both will give you clunks granted they are totally different sounds.

+1 another vote for U joints or something in the brakes. Drums are crap, should always be first suspect, especially if you live in an area that thinks 9000lb/in of salt on the road is a good idea. Get the rear axle up on jack stands and spin stuff by hand, you'll find out where the problem is quickly.

Sometimes the covers themselves can be a bit tricky to tell apart. A big flat lip is characteristic of a Chrysler 8.25 (left). Note both axles have rubber fill plugs and indented covers:
