Rear Diff Questions
I have a 98 XJ Limited with factory tow-package, full-sized spare, and 8.25 Trac-Lok. I thought the spare and the tow-package were sure signs of a LS but they aren't always.
I've been searching all the Cherokees with Vin#'s I find on Craigslist in the database to see what options they have. They are all over the place with different options.
I've found that most (but not all) 97-01 XJs have the 8.25 but they are open. I've seen a couple that have D35s and all those have been open.
My question is, did they put any D35s with Trac-Loks in XJs? How about WJs?
Also, did they put any 8.25s or D44s with Trac-Loks (or newer-type LS) in any WJs that don't have Quadra-Drive?
I'd really like to find a 2wd XJ or WJ with a LS rear for a daily driver. I'm still open to a 4wd too but it seems like the one I have now roars and vibrates a little too much.
Thanks

You are going to have a hard time finding an xj with the factory lsd. Only sure way is to open the diff and look. The factory lsd is probably dead by now anyways. I would get a clean one and put a Detroit true trac in it yourself. That's what I did with mine. No clutches to worry about and no additives.

If it vibrates and roars you have some other problem. Mine is 4wd and the only time I had a roar was when my front hubs went bad. Maybe a dry transfercase or loose chain or something but it shouldn't roar.

I guess it really isn't roaring--just a little whirring noise and it's very bumpy over ruts and stuff. I have a long muddy-*** driveway that has ruts and roots and stuff. I get to 4wheel every day whether I want to or not--haha.
It's not as bad as the 76 Waggy I used to have. It was really bad. I do miss that that thing though.

I used to have that driveway and I learned that you have to tend them as though they were a garden.

Hi Chris
My 04 WJ 4x4 "Overland" edition has it all a 4.7HO engine factory Class IV hitch, 3.73 gears, D30/D44 both with Vari-Lok Progressive differentials, 17" wheels, additional oil, trans, steering coolers. In fact it came with every option offered by Jeep that year that wasn't included in the Overland pkg. very few.
I tow with mine quite often it does an excellent job of it with a all steel 21' car hauler and my XJ.
