Default rear diff cover bolt rounded

10 o'clock direction bolt pretty badly rounded

i was going to re-seal the cover and replace the fluid, but that thing is giving me hard time.

i bought craftsman bolt out kit and grip-tite one also.
grip-tite one can't even hold the bolt,
but craftsman one hold the bolt little bit and made the bolt more rounded

if i can hammer down the craftsman one, it might work.
but there is no room to hammer because of fuel tank.

i'm thinking good vise grip now, does it really work?
maybe i need to drop the whole differential thing.. i don't know

can anybody give me any advise
thanks

Try the vise grips and hope they work, if not you'll have to figure out a way to use an easy out on it. Buy new bolts before you put it back together. Good luck.

Jack up the jeep so the rear diff hangs below the gas tank, then breakout the hammer on the easy-out. Pound it on and wrench off

^ Be careful using an "easy out" or reverse pitch bolt extractor, when those things break off, you've just included a harden center to the bolt you now need to drill out. I just drill them out just under the tap size and hope it breaks loose before I get done. Its just a ****ty situation all around...

One a side thought, you could grind in a flat head slot and try an impact driver

If the tip holds up it usually works...

cut off the bolt head with a cut off wheel and then the bottom should just come out by hand, unless you used locktite which you should not do on a diff cover

Good idea trans am, should thread right out, or you can use a air chisel to "turn" it

can you weld a nut to the damaged bolt head?
sounds like someone cross threaded that bolt when they put it in last.
