I use a trailer tongue "poly-box" Light weight triangular shaped box that I just use a tiedown strap around to the existing cargo hold downs screwed into the body. I can lay down the back seat and slide the box forward and fit my 33" spare in and still have room to close the hatch. Plenty of room in the box for tools, straps, etc and it was only $75 dollars. I used to have a diamond plate one that was like $250 and had my high-lift bolted to it in my old 4runner. Pics: The jeep one is bad and can get another one in the daytime....dark in the ATL, other is the 4runner set-up.
Hope this gives you an idea...works good for me so far. Especially when I get the swing away tire carrier

Little tip I will pass along.
If you are retaining your inside spare tire: Grand Cherokee's have a tire cover that has a zippered pouch. Makes a good stowing stop for things like: jumper cables, bungee straps, ratchet straps and so on.
Also: I found a sweet little trim piece out of a rice-minivan. Its used as a grocery store bag hanger behind the rear seat. Only problem is it has to be mounted as far up as possible on the XJ seat. I double-up the bags and put stuff in that would normally be rolling around. Anti-freeze/windshield washer bottles, quarts of oil.
Speaking of rolling around, if you have something like a small toolbox or a small compressor and you are tired of it sliding around. This only works if you have carpeting in your cargo area- Go to the hardware store and get some adhesive backed Velcro. Adhere the "hook" side (coarser-side) of the Velcro to the bottom. The carpeting will act as the "loop" side and keep whatever it is from sliding around. Only drawback..can be a pain if you WANT it to slide.
I realize this may not be EXACTLY what you were looking for, but I thought this COULD be helpful.
I'll post pics later if anyone wants, but right now I have a SYE TC to install.

those grocery bag hooks are stock in the liberty so if you see a liberty in the junkyard, grab them. they are screwed to the back of the seat
I am thinking of stealing 96_XJ's idea by either the same setup on left and spare (31") on top of that laying down and the right side having 2 lids front and back, or spare flat on floor on right side and a box with the two lids a little taller than the tire to the left. Second is similar to what i have currently but just a plastic file slide out shelf thing pitched at an angle.. works, but not very appealing.

I put my full sized spare tire outside on a rear rack. I use two rubbermaid containers (med sized I guess) side by side in the cargo area. They are plastic and light weight. I cut-to-fit a 3/4" peice of plywood and Hurculiner'ed it. It lays on the floor in the cargo area so the Rubbermaids don't slip around. I cut 2" holes in the plywood where the 4 factory D rings are and fold them up as tie downs. In my '96, there's quite a bit of room under the rear seat. Tow straps, fire extinguisher, jack, gloves, etc fit perfect under there.

you can also use a cargo net and mount it to the back of the rear seat to stop things from sliding around. these are very strong can be bought new cheap and found in alot of Lincolns in junk yard for cheaper,if you have a big sub box they dont work so well but if not there great.
I took the fabric off the rear of my seat and replaced it with vinyl rubber, mounted my sub to the rear of the seat.my sub goes back there, my tow straps and med kit hang on the roof via bingies (my headliner is out) and I have a bag full of tools comealongs, mini shovels, oil, food, water, etc. from the spare tire in a big kit
