Rear Axle ratio?
Alrighty fella's here's the deal.
My brother has a 1993 4 door cherokee sport 4.0 h.o. AW4 and 231 case.
It has the chryco 8.25 rear axle.
I have a 1991 limited with a 4.0 h.o. and aw4 with 242 case and a dana 35 with 3.55 ratio.
He is crushing the sport so I am going to swap my d35 for the chryco 8.25.
How can I tell the rear ratio of the chryco to see if it is 3.55 geared?
somewhere I heard that all 4.0 H.O. with aw4 are 3.55 up to 96 is this right?
I'm gonna swap tomorrow regardles but I could use some help with ratio.
Thanks,
Matt

If you have a 4.0L and an AW4 without a tow package or anything it should be 3.55 gearing. To double check, there should be a tag on the diff cover. If there's nothing there, you could always jack up the rear end and spin the wheel one time around and see how many turns the driveshaft makes. And if it goes roughly 3.55 turns around, then it has 3.55 gearing.

Thanks for the response cherokee , I know my d35 has the 3 55 in the id tag which from what i understand means it has 3.55's but what is the code on the chryco for the 3.55's is it the same?
Also if i do the spin test is it easy to distinguis between 3.55 and I believe 3.73 was the other possibility ?

get the last 10 digits of the VIN and call any jeep dealers parts dept and they can run it and tell you what ratio it came with... takes less than a minute for them to run it.

All automatic XJs 96 and older are 3.55 and all manual are 3.07 as I understand from our local XJ Genius. But just to be sure spinning the axle is a incredibly reliable method. Just make sure to marke both the tire, and the yoke, after you spin the the yoke one complete revolution if the tire spins about 3 and a half times, it's 3.55, if it spins about 3 even, it's 3.07 and if it spins about 3 and 3/4 it's 373. So on and so forth.
