Default Rear axle pinion bearing

So when I picked the jeep up from the 4WD shop today, they told me that the rear pinion bearing was starting to go out. I asked how much to get it fixed, he said for 600 dollars they rip the axle apart and replace all the bearings. I asked if this was something I could do myself. He said prolly not cuz I need to know how to set the gears up right. He also said this should be done in the next 6-8 months. So I figure I have some options.

1. Have them fix it for an arm and a leg.

2. Try it myself for the price of a new bearing, one headache, few thrown tools, a lot of swearing, and one hole in the wall from my fist.

3. Replace my D35 with a junk yard C8.25 29 spline and pray that the bearings are good for 70 dollars.

I like option 3 the best. Any input would be awesome. Thanks

Interesting question. If a guy went after the pinion bearing, and only the pinion bearing, and kept perfect track of all the shims, would the gear-lash come out OK? I know it's a job best left to a pro shop.
I'd go with option #3 myself, but only after it did something, noise, heat, play/vibration. Burnt oil. You might check that oil and get a 2nd opinion.

Ps, I love my Treck! My first bike with metric tires.

I would agree. no need to put money into a crap axle... I would get a 8.25, change the fluids/brakes and run with it. if you need bearings then your out 70$ plus fluid costs but would be putting moeny into a good axle not a bad one...

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. the gear faces wear which will add more backlash over time. the preload could also be affected as bearings/races can be different from manufacturer to another, or batch to batch. but I would bet it would be close. but wouldn't roll the dice on it. bearings aren't cheap enough for me to buy twice.... let alone the work it takes to do them all just to have them go bad...

Also why did they say its going out? is the diff making noise? seal leaking? jsut curiouse as to why they would say that. makes me think its BS with a 6-8 month guess... who can predict the future? if its bad... its bad...

Good advice. Change the oil and check it yourself, then run it until something acts up.

There is a noise, I thought it was coming from the u joints, but I guess not. I guess that just goes to show home much I know about drivetrain stuff lol.

Yea I guess I'll just go ahead and do option 3, that was my favorite option anyway. Now just to convince my dad...

Thanks for the help guys!!
