"3am and no access to a press" method:

Cut the old bearing off with a saw or cutoff wheel. Cut most of the way through the inner race, then put a fat chisel in the groove and split the inner race. Bearing falls off.

Slide the new bearing down the shaft.

Find a piece of heavy-wall pipe that will just slip over the axle and only contacts the inner bearing race. Support the center of the axle so it's not resting on the studs. Use the largest hammer you have to drive the bearing home.

Great advise, I have a Dana 44 I just picked up and the seals are shot. I'll try your procedure before going to the machine shop.

Wait...if the bearings are the same for 91 through 99 then that bearing should still be pressed in the axle tube. I'm I wrong for a 99 8.25" or what? If that bearing is stuck to your axle shaft then you have bigger problems.

Non C-clip diffs have the bearing pressed onto the axle... most 99's are non c-clip.

Everything I have read says both 27 and 29 spline 8.25" axles are c-clip axles. Bearings have the same part # for 91 through 99 and a different # for 00 through 01. I know the 95 I have has c-clips and that bearing is much easier to replace than a non c-clip tapered bearing like on a Jeep model 20.

I have a 94 8.25 with C clip axles and my friends 99 also has the same setup. Mine just slipped right out after taking off the clip and the bearings stood in the rear...Tj

if there Clip axles they are just like the ford 8.8 to do. once the axle slides out than the outter bearing/seal is exposed. I had to use a dremel to cut the old bearing out on the last one i did. I broke 2 slide hammer bearing removal tools. I used a bearing/seal driver for the install.

Pull the c-clips, pull the shafts, pull the oil seal and then pull the bearing with a 3 jaw slide hammer like this.... http://www.slidehammers.net/shop/all...?item=26080730

then install new bearing, seal, and everything else including oil. Done.
